It was late when she pushed open the door to the studio, Stevie at her heels. Lily and Taylor had stayed until after dark. Then she and Skye had sat by the fire, talking, laughing, being together. Beth yawned and closed the door gently behind her.

“What are you doing here?” Cara asked.

Beth rolled her eyes. “I sleep here, remember?”

Cara sat on the edge of the bed. “She's afraid,” she said. “Terrified actually.”

“Who?”

“Who do you think? Skye. She scared and she doesn't know how to do this. You have to show her.”

Beth kicked her shoes off. “Show her what? I'm too tired for this, Cara. What are you talking about?”

Cara sighed. “Beth, get your ass up those stairs.”

Beth froze. “What?” she croaked.

“You heard me. That woman is lying up there right now wishing she had the courage to invite you into her life. She doesn't. And you know why she doesn't. Because the last time she did, she got hurt. So it's up to you to invite yourself in. If you want to be there, of course.”

“Cara, I can't just walk up into her private apartment like that.”

“Do you want to?”

Beth stopped. Yes. Yes, she did. But that still didn't mean she should do it.

“I'm not saying there needs to be any... funny business,” Cara said. “But she wants you there. She's scared and thinks she might lose her shop, she's come out to her friends, whether they knew already or not is irrelevant. And now she's up there thinking all this through on her own. That's not how things should work. You have to show her that you share things now. Troubles, worries, a bed even. You have to make the first move Beth.”

Beth sank down onto the bed. “You always made the first move for me,” she said sadly.

“So, I'm telling you what to do now.” Cara wavered in front of her. “Go upstairs, Beth,” she said, more softly. “Go ahead.”

And then she was gone. Beth looked down at Stevie. “What do you think, Steve?”

The dog wagged her tail.

Slowly, Beth got up. She turned off the lights in the studio, Stevie following her as she groped her way through the darkened bookshop. Behind the counter, into the kitchen, and then the dark green door was in front of her.

To her surprise, it wasn't closed. It was cracked open an inch or so, enough to see a dim light and some stairs. She closed her eyes. She could turn back now, pretend this had never happened. But... but she didn't want to. Yes, she was scared too. But she needed to be the brave one right now.

With shaking legs she crept up the stairs. Another door greeted her on top of the landing. She hesitated for only a second before she knocked.

The wait was agony. A second, two, three at most, she stood there, heart in her stomach, legs trembling, breath coming fast. And then the most beautiful two words she'd heard in forever.

“Come in,” Skye said.
